What's Going On? 

  • San Diego and Santa Cruz Counties are currently having outbreaks of hepatitis A infection.  
  • Cases due to the same strain of hepatitis A virus are also in other California counties, as well as Arizona and Utah. 
  • Transmission is occurring person-to-person; no commercial product is identified as being contaminated.
  • All homeless populations and persons using injection or non-injection illicit drugs are at the highest risk. 
  • There is no outbreak of hepatitis A in San Francisco.
  • San Francisco is responding to protect its population so that an outbreak of hepatitis A does not occur here.

 

 How to Get Protected?

  • Get the Hepatitis A vaccine - Hep A vaccine is safe and works well!
  • Use your own towels, toothbrushes, eating utensils, or other personal items
  • Don’t share food, drinks, or smokes with other people
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after using the restroom, before eating or preparing food, and before and after sex
